COUNSEL TO PARTNER
This 100-year-old plus prestigious GP AM firm has been expanding their IP practice over the past 5 years. They have brought in several small IP groups in various parts of the country and expanded all aspects of their IP practice group. The IP leadership needs adding some up through the ranks IP professionals into the Partnership arena. They are looking to bring in a Counsel level IP professional whose practice focus is in tech patent prosecution and client counseling.
The firm has a very large tech patent prosecution practice with multiple locations domestically and internationally, and the group works as one team. The firm has a stronghold in the Midwest, West, and South, as well as Silicon Valley and DC. The group services well financed start-up companies to several elite Fortune companies, as well as prestigious internet and social media companies. In addition to patent prosecution, the IP group has a strong litigation practice group and represents several companies in high stakes, bet the company litigation.
The law firm has zero debt and they have self-financed themselves to expand their IP practice. The firm is well run, very entrepreneurial, and business savvy. The firm leadership provides an amazing work culture. This reflects in the firm’s compensation, which is among the highest in the country. The firm also provides an excellent compensation and benefit plan for the admin support staff as well and as a result of this, the firm experiences very little turn over in the support ranks.
The IP leadership is seeking a Counsel Level IP professional that has started to develop their own clients and portable business. The leadership would bring this person on board, provide superior marketing support to help this person grow their book. In addition, the leadership will provide an above market compensation in terms of base salary. They will also pay this Counsel person a percentage of their origination and percentage of what this person bills on other work that they will receive from other partners. They will also pay a discretionary bonus as well and a signing bonus as well. The leadership will also set a date for promotion to Partner.
The leadership is hoping that this person can make the transition into the Partnership ranks within 1 year to 1 1/2 years. The IP practice group has a void in the Senior and Counsel level ranks, so they don't have the IP professionals to promote into the partnership ranks. This is why the firm is being super aggressive in terms of the compensation and timeline to Partner.
The qualified person will hold a Counsel level title, have a book of business that they would like to grow, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and have the desire to become a Partner on a short timeline. An advanced degree in an engineering discipline is desirable. The firm would like to base this person out of their DC or Silicon Valley office. The leadership would consider this person to be based out of other firm’s offices. They have locations throughout the country.
